Noukome

Kanade’s got a hard life. Not because he’s ugly or lives in an abusive family. No, Kanade has a mysterious voice in his head that commands him to make ridiculous choices, or suffer a malicious migraine until he submits. When given the choice to Either hug his fat, love-struck neighbour or have a pretty girl fall from the sky, his obvious decision results in him meeting Chocolate, a gluttonous girl who’s supposedly there to help him solve the magical mystery behind his condition, and the practical-joke pulling god whos behind it all. But with a few jar-fulls of cutesy classroom chums after him and bizarre situations forced upon him every few minutes, how can he make any progress?

Well, surprisingly fast as it turns out. Cutting the comedic cruise short after an abrupt 10 episodes, Noukome doesn’t last long, yet still manages to feel kind of dragged out and dull. The leading gag of Kanade’s painfully pressured choices are limited, immature and usually hollow in purpose, while supporting characters like a cynical Kudere, Onii-chan obsessed monster and Chocolate with her adorable appetite don’t add much to the experience either. As both a comedy and a harem Noukome fails to entertain for long, and it may be just as well that it pulled a Monty Python with one of the most hurried and hopeless conclusions to an anime I’ve ever seen.

It may be time for something – completely different.

Though Noukome excels at coming up with some neat outfits or crazy environments to throw you at next, the visuals are just as slack as the open jaws of Kanade’s joyless victims. Characters look morphed and deformed at various instances, movements are frequently sluggish, and though colorful, there’s little to keep your sights invested in whats happening on-screen. At least the Audio fares a little better, flaunting two catchy theme tunes and a veritable swell of girly voice performances right through out. Though she’s thicker than a concrete encyclopedia, Chocolate in particular is devilishly cute.

Ore no Nōnai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Rabu Kome o Zenryoku de Jama Shite is a stupid title, and also a very predictable and forgettable rom-com series, if you could call it that. The laughs are sparse and short-lived, the presentation a gunshot from humble, and with only one or two stand-out mascots for chuckles or “awws”, it’s just not a great show. Young teens who’re just branching into the world of anime will find it a good introduction for the status quo of mediocre, exaggerated comedy. For everyone else, this is just another less than average comedic-harem anime.

Sometimes the best choice is apathy.
